- 1/2 cup Masoor dal (red lentils) (Whole or split)
- 3 cups Water
- 1 small, finely chopped Onion (pyaz)
- 1 medium, finely chopped Tomato (tamatar)
- 1-inch piece, grated Ginger (adrak)
- 2 cloves, minced Garlic (lahsun)
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds (jeera)
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder (haldi)
- a pinch Asafoetida (hing) - optional
- to taste Salt (namak)
- 1/4 tsp Black pepper powder (kali mirch)
- 2 tbsp, chopped Fresh coriander leaves (dhania patta)
- 1 tsp Ghee or olive oil (for tadka)
- 1/4 cup, finely chopped Carrot (optional) (gajar) - optional

Rinse the masoor dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Soak for 10 minutes to speed up cooking.
