Badam Katli, also known as Badam Burfi, is a delicious North Indian sweet made primarily from almonds (badam) and minimal sugar, making it a perfect treat for health-conscious individuals. This mithai is cherished for its melt-in-the-mouth texture and delicate, nutty flavor. Traditionally, Badam Katli is prepared during major Indian festivals such as Diwali and Raksha Bandhan, symbolizing prosperity and togetherness. The simplicity of its ingredients, combined with the rich taste of almonds, makes it a beloved choice for both special occasions and everyday indulgence. Unlike heavier Indian desserts, Badam Katli is light and naturally gluten-free, making it suitable for a wide range of dietary preferences. The use of cardamom (elaichi) adds an aromatic touch, while the absence of excessive ghee or condensed milk keeps this version lower in calories. Its beautiful diamond-shaped pieces, often garnished with edible silver leaf (varak), are visually appealing and easy to serve in portion-controlled sizes, ideal for those tracking their calorie intake. Badam Katli is a perfect example of how traditional Indian sweets can be adapted for modern, health-conscious lifestyles. Its quick preparation and wholesome ingredients make it a great homemade option for families seeking nutritious yet festive treats.

Allergens: tree nuts

Ingredients(for 2-3 diamond-shaped pieces (approx. 30g))

  • 1 cup Whole almonds (badam) (soaked overnight for best results)
  • 1/3 cup Powdered jaggery (gud, substitute with coconut sugar for variation)
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1/4 tsp Green cardamom powder (elaichi)
  • 1/2 tsp Rose water (optional, for fragrance) - optional
  • 1 tsp Ghee (for greasing, use coconut oil for vegan version)
  • as needed Edible silver leaf (varak) (optional, for garnish) - optional
  • 1 tsp Sliced pistachios (for garnish) - optional

Instructions

  1. 1

Soak the whole almonds (badam) in hot water for 1 hour or overnight for easier peeling. Drain and remove the skins.

    5 minutes

Peeling almonds ensures a smooth texture in your katli.

  2. 2

Pat the peeled almonds dry completely with a muslin cloth. Blend them into a fine powder using a mixer. Avoid over-blending to prevent releasing oil.

    5 minutes

Pulse the almonds in short bursts for a fine powder.

  3. 3

In a heavy-bottomed kadhai, heat water and powdered jaggery on low flame. Stir until the jaggery dissolves completely and forms a syrup.

    5 minutes

Strain the syrup to remove any impurities if needed.

  4. 4

Add the almond powder to the jaggery syrup and stir continuously on a low-medium flame. Mix in green cardamom powder and rose water (if using).

    5 minutes

Constant stirring prevents lumps and sticking.

Why This Dish is Healthy

This healthy Badam Katli recipe uses natural sweetener (jaggery) and limits the amount of ghee, making it lower in calories and glycemic index compared to traditional versions. Almonds provide good fats and plant-based protein, which help manage hunger and maintain muscle mass. The absence of refined flour, minimal ghee, and moderate jaggery make it an excellent dessert for calorie-conscious and diabetic individuals.

Badam Katli is rich in protein, healthy fats, and dietary fiber from almonds, making it a nourishing sweet. Almonds are a great source of Vitamin E, magnesium, and antioxidants that support heart and brain health. By using jaggery instead of refined sugar, this recipe offers a slower-releasing carbohydrate, providing sustained energy and micronutrients like iron and potassium. This mithai contains minimal saturated fat and is naturally gluten-free, suitable for those with sensitivities.

Pro Tips

  • 💡Tip 1: Dry the peeled almonds thoroughly to avoid sticky dough.
  • 💡Tip 2: Do not overcook the mixture; it will harden after cooling.
  • 💡Tip 3: Use a sharp knife for clean diamond cuts while still warm.
