How to Make Mango Slush (Traditional & Healthy Version)
Mango Slush is a refreshing Indian beverage that captures the essence of mango season, especially during the hot months when luscious, ripe mangoes (aam) flood local markets. Known for its vibrant color and naturally sweet flavor, Mango Slush is a delightful treat enjoyed by people of all ages. Traditionally, this cool drink is prepared using fresh Alphonso or Kesar mangoes, which are prized for their juicy pulp and aromatic taste. It’s a popular choice during Indian summers, offering an instant respite from the heat and acting as a festive drink during occasions like Holi or family gatherings. In India, mango-based drinks are cherished as nostalgic reminders of childhood summers spent under the shade of mango trees. Mango Slush stands out because it’s simple to make, uses minimal ingredients, and requires no cooking, making it an ideal recipe for busy households. The smooth, icy texture, combined with the natural sweetness of mango, makes it a healthier alternative to processed beverages. This beverage also allows for regional customization, with some families adding a hint of kala namak (black salt) or chaat masala for a tangy twist. Whether served as a welcome drink or as a mid-day cooler, Mango Slush is a beloved summer classic in Indian cuisine.
Ingredients(for 1 tall glass (approx. 200 ml))
- 2 large Ripe mangoes (Alphonso or Kesar preferred) (aam)
- 1 cup Ice cubes (baraf)
- 1/2 cup Cold water (thanda paani)
- 1 tbsp Lemon juice (nimbu ras)
- 1-2 tsp Honey (shahad; natural sweetener) - optional
- 4-5 Mint leaves (pudina) - optional
- 1/2 tsp Chaat masala (for tangy flavor) - optional
- a pinch Kala namak (optional, for enhanced taste) - optional
Instructions
- 1
Wash and peel the ripe mangoes. Cut the mango flesh away from the seed and chop into cubes.
5 minutes
Use fully ripe Alphonso or Kesar mangoes for the best sweetness and flavor.
- 2
Place the mango cubes in a blender jar. Add ice cubes and cold water.
2 minutes
If you want a thicker slush, reduce the amount of water.
- 3
Add lemon juice to the blender. Optionally, add honey for natural sweetness.
2 minutes
Taste the mango first; if it’s very sweet, you may skip honey.
- 4
Blend until smooth and slushy. The mixture should have a semi-frozen, icy texture.
2 minutes
Pulse the blender rather than running it continuously for a better slush consistency.
